Moving to a New Location

Much to my chagrin, this site has been languishing in a forgotten corner of the internet. I love the idea of keeping a blog, but something about this one became very hard to make time for.

But! I still want to share our stories and pictures with you. So we are moving shop. Hopefully the new location will help me get more posting done quicker. If you want to check it out, please contact me and I will get you the new link.

Hugs,

Lisa

PS: As a parting gift, here is a family picture with all 5 of us

More Kitty Quotes

It is high time we had another round-up of fun quotes from this 4 (!) year old.

Mom: “Kitty, come see this! Isn’t this great?”

Kitty: “Not as great as I was expecting, but it’s pretty great I guess…”

Mom to Dad on phone: “I think someone handsome is coming to see me!”

Kitty: “No, someone silly!

Mom: “We’re going to restart the computer, so it will shut down.”

Kitty: “Then it will shut up!”

Kitty, singing: “They find true love, cleaning the kitchen.”

Grandma: “Were any Lilys harmed in the making of these Lily sandwiches?”

Kitty: “65 Lilys were steamed in the process.”

Kitty: “I’m almost like a mommy. Except I don’t have a vacuum.”

Kitty: “I don’t pick books that are weird and awkward like you do, Lily.”

Negligent

I have been grossly negligent. I am ashamed it has been this long. This critical celebratory post should have been posted five whole days ago.

Five days ago was Chub’s birthday!

dscn4324

What a great year it has been! Chub hasn’t grown much this year, but I can hardly believe how much he’s been rolling around. He still doesn’t eat solids, but seems very happy slurping up his dinners. He is quite the strong one: he’s always happy to carry Kitty and Lily around. Sometimes he even carries Mommy and Daddy!

We love you Chub! May you have many more happy birthdays!

Lily Turns One

Well, folks it’s happened: Lily decided after a year of life she’d better go ahead and turn one. Time has gone by so fast this year that I’m already two months late in posting about it!

The actual big day did not go quite how I would have wished. I was going to take the girls to story time at the library, but Kitty said she really didn’t want to go, and I figured fighting her would not lead to a fun outing. So instead we had a rather grumpy morning at home.

Later, while Lily was napping and Kitty was having quite time I hit on the perfect idea to make up for the otherwise rather lame day. I would take the girls to Porterville’s splash pad! So, when Lily woke up, I got the girls all dressed in swimsuits and slathered them in sunscreen and headed out. It was our first time going to the splash pad, and I only kind of knew where it was, but we found it; and found that the drought is too severe, they don’t have the water turned on.

That sure took the wind out of my sails, but I asked Kitty is she wanted to play on a dry playground (they did at least have that), or if we should go to Grandma and Grandpa’s and swim in their pool. We decided to drive all the way across town to actually go swimming. By the time we get there Kitty was looking like this:

DSCN4215

Since I knew she needed the sleep, I let her sleep. Lily and I played in the grass next to the open car until we had to go home for dinner.

DSCN4217

We had Grandpa over for dinner (Grandma was out of town) for pizza, and that, at least turned out really nice.

As this all was happening on the 7th, I kept reminding myself that we DID have a party for Lily coming up. That came on the 20th when Grandma could actually be there too. We invited our local cousins, and had a pool party!

DSCN4224

As it turned out, Lily was not particularly jazzed about the pool, and mostly wanted to stay out. But we had fun anyways.

DSCN4236

Unfortunately my camera ran out of batteries as we went inside for dinner, cake, and presents. Lily did enjoy the cake quite a bit, as well as her presents which included the traditional box of kleenex. The kleenex was a surprisingly long lasting gift (she finished pulling everything out just a few days ago) since she also liked to shred each tissue, and with that kind of mess potential on my hands I never let her have very many at a time!

As a newly minted one-year old, Lily has lots of great baby skills. She can say a number of words: “Mama”, “Dada”, “Go go go”, “Uh-oh”, and occasionally some animal sounds as well as an approximation of “All done”. She is a very confident walker, loves to dance and conduct music, and she is a dedicated mess maker. She is a busy little girl who can find any scrap of food not swept off the floor, and she is also very gentle and loving with babies (both toy, and real alike). She and Kitty are very close, sometimes so close the other gets annoyed, but they are always ready with a hug or a kiss if the other is crying. In fact, Lily only would give kisses to Kitty when she first learned how. Now Lily loves to kiss, and wave, and give tummy flubs to just about anyone. She doesn’t like to hold hands, and wants to help with dinner and dishes just like her big sister. Her favorite book is Daddy Hugs by Karen Katz, and she is always excited when Daddy comes home. In fact, she can be rather imperious about being picked up by Daddy right away and taken upstairs to “help” him change clothes.

I know Lily was meant for our family right now, and she is a perfect fit. We can’t imagine life without our silly Lily-Billy.

Spring 2016: An Update

Kitty is now 3 years old.

DSCN4113

Kitty, who is all of 25 lbs, is as verbal as ever, and loves to make up words and names for things. She can be very outgoing at times: she is almost always ready to tell a waiter what she wants for dinner when all the poor waiter was thinking about was drinks. She is also shy at other times: most people in the ward get a bit of a scowl when they greet her. She still loves to read and be read to and our weekly trips to the library are basically mandatory.

Ever since Christmas, a little doll (previously known as The Brown Baby) she loves, has been named The Baby Jesus. And Kitty is the mommy, Mary. She is a very dedicated mother who nurses her baby, dresses her, helps her walk, and even bought her (The Baby Jesus is a girl) a stroller and a car seat so The Baby Jesus can come with us just about any place we go. Kitty also has a huge bear who is known as Joseph, and they sleep in the same bed (sometimes Jesus is with them) and are married.

As well as being a good mommy, Kitty is a great big sister. She has always wanted to be involved with Lily and does a great job sharing her toys and her parent’s attention.

Kitty loves cats, princesses, squirt guns, fixing things, swings, Lily, and cooking. For her birthday party, I’d initially figured she’d want a princess party, but when I talked to her about it she wasn’t all that interested in that idea. Instead, she loved the idea of having a cooking birthday party!

We started by letting the kids prepare their own pizzas, then while they cooked we moved on to activities.

We had several games of running around to put ingredients in a pot, which culminated in a team effort to make (pretend) turtle soup.

DSCN4158

Kitty loves hearing about her Mellor ancestors who found a turtle while they were taking their handcarts across the plains to Utah. When the family tried to cook the turtle, the turtle made it clear he had other ideas by repeatedly crawling out of the pot. The undaunted father sits on the pot to ensure the fleeing turtle becomes their dinner.

In recreation of this great family saga, we had the kids put the turtle in the pot and then run away to collect sticks for a fire or other ingredients while an adult helped the turtle escape. After several rounds of this (always with a chorus of “Get back in the pot, turtle!”) we let the girls take turns sitting on the pot to keep the turtle in.

DSCN4162

Then it was time to eat the pizza! Everyone seemed to enjoy their creations, and the party was a resounding success!

Year 3-here we come!

As of this writing, Lily is 10 months old.

DSCN4160

She is almost 18 lbs, and has a smile for everyone. She will put anything in her mouth, and eats almost as many things. She zooms around crawling, and looks like she’ll take her first step any day. She babbles when the mood strikes her, always wants to do what Kitty is doing, and is overall a very copacetic kid.

Lily adores bath time, and has learned how to tickle Court’s belly button. When she was sick this last week, she had a few days where she only smiled a handful of times–it was one of her most worrying symptoms! We’re happy the smile is back on our little sunshine girl.

Utah in January

This year, instead of going out to Utah in November or December for a holiday visit, we decided to wait until January so we could go to the Provo City Center Temple open house. We were really excited to be able to take Kitty and Lily on the tour.

In my wildest dreams I figured we could get a FANTASTIC picture of the family at the temple, and send it out with our Valentines this year. None of them ended up being on the card. What do you think, should they have made the cut?

Our best picture was actually from the photo boothish thing they had set up in the basement:

IMG_e7b0ac31-53ae-4027-8f2c-cb51c2f61bbb

As we were leaving, Kitty kept asking Court to make her a snowball, which she would promptly shove in his face.

DSCN5032

This makes it sound like only Kitty could be having fun, but Court loves the cold and his daughter too much to resent a couple dozen snowballs to the face!

The rest of the trip included exchanging Christmas presents, playing instruments, building snowmen, reading books, and just enjoying each other’s company.

Christmas 2015

Christmas this year was everything we could have hoped it would be!

And now we are exhausted.

DSCN4087Kitty catching some Zs after church today–a rare occurrence these days.

We have had parties all week as we’ve celebrated Coral’s coming home for Christmas, a Swedish Christmas (a tradition I grew up with), Crystal and Regis’ arrival to Porterville, a party in Visalia, Clam Chowder for Christmas Eve, and Christmas itself.

We’ve all had a great time with all the family in town: Kitty was in tears that we had to leave off playing dress-up. There has been a bit of a stomach bug floating around, but it kindly took Christmas day off, and we were able to all celebrate together.

Before we went to Grandma and Grandpa’s on Christmas, we opened gifts at our place.

Court and I had spent the end of Christmas Eve assembling the kitchen that we’d got for Kitty (and Lily when she’s a bit bigger), and we were very excited for Kitty to see it. We had it hiding under a blanket.DSCN4061

See? Behind Lily? Despite the huge obstruction it provided, Kitty decided to open all her smaller presents first.

DSCN4075

Mostly, they were books for our little book lover. But when Kitty did get around to opening it, her reaction was perfect. She was immediately playing with it, but every once in a while she would stop playing, look at us, and squeal, “It’s a kitchen!”

Yes, Kitty, it is. Now, is it your turn to cook dinner yet?

Look-alike Lily

Lily is a Daddy’s girl. She doesn’t prefer him; she looks like him.

That’s Lily on the left. Here’s another one to show it’s not just a fluke:

How about after a few months?

Yup. Daddy’s girl.

Lily and Kitty looked very different as newborns:

But after a few months, they look like two peas in a pod.

Lily’s a look-alike, but she’s one-of-a-kind!

Halloween 2015

At 2 and a half, Kitty was ready to be part of the Halloween planning this year. We talked about costumes, showed her past years, and asked what she wanted to be.

At 2 and a half, Kitty changed her idea of the perfect costume many times.

The most frequent answer, though, was a princess.

DSCN3941

Kitty and Lily were princesses

And Court and I were their hard working peasants.* Art imitates life, don’t you know.

DSCN3920

My sewing machine was having a hard time with life, so I only had time to make Kitty’s dress, but the peasant costumes were thrifted, and the crowns are made of spray-painted lace (which worked impressively well).

DSCN3946

Kitty loved her dress and crown, but didn’t really enjoy the whole trick-or-treating thing. Even Grandma Anne was too intimidating. Maybe that will come next year.

In any case, we love our little princesses!

*Any similarity to other costumes in the family this year is purely from simultaneous genius.
